General Information
Roger Sherman School was constructed in 1929 as a separate four-room school building to supplement the Liberty Street facility which was built in 1894. In 1948, Sherman School was renovated and eight rooms were added. In 1975, three double, re-locatable classrooms were placed on the Sherman School site to permit the discontinuation of the Liberty Street building as a classroom facility and to accommodate the elementary school students of the area. Roger Sherman was enlarged and renovated in 1988. It now houses 32 classrooms and a staff of more than 60. The enrollment of Sherman School is approximately 656 students.
Roger Sherman (1721-1793) was an American political leader. He helped draft and signed the Declaration of Independence. He was mayor of New Haven and treasurer of Yale College. Sherman was also a United States Representative and Senator.
